Working with Kaylin Isler on Lower Body Mechanics - Golf swing

Training on "unstable" services is a very popular thing to these days. In golf many times, golfers are asking to perform swings on foam rollers or other unstable platforms in an effort to promote balance and better proprioception and stability. Unfortunately unless a golfer has good lower body mechanics, which most even at elite levels do not, you are actually going to degrade lower body power input and negatively impact weight shift and torque patterns.

The one unstable surface we have found that promotes good lower body mechanics at the same time providing an unstable platform is the Reebok Core Board.

In this video post I have chosen excerpts from a progressive skills training (PST) workout with zenoLINK/welch-e technologies sponsored professional golfer Kaylin Isler. Training took place at Total Concept Golf in Southlake, Texas outside of Dallas. In this video we discuss the use of a Reebok Core Board as a unstable surface which provides feedback and training while at the same time helps to promote effective lower body mechanics.

Amy Hung Yoga

video blog: Amy Hung, YOGA

We have incorporated yoga into our PST training for athletes. Yoga is an incredibly powerful way to create range of motion, strength, function and promote positive energy flow. However, we took it one step further...

welch-e technologies collaborated with yoga instructor, Kris Marks (kris on twitter), to create a yoga program that utilizes traditional yoga concepts but blends our movement pattern development techniques (PST). The result is a one-of-a-kind yoga program that has incredible impact on mind, body, spirit and activity/sport specific FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE.

This video blog contains excerpts of Kris taking LPGA golfer Amy Hung through the basics of a program designed specifically for rotational distal end acceleration sports like golf !

Amy Hung Functional Training 1

video blog: Amy Hung, Functional Training 1

The Monday after the Corning Classic, which just happened to be Memorial Day, LPGA golfer Amy Hung spent the day at welch-e technologies. We re-zenoLINK tested her, analyzed the data with her and refined her training program to fit her functional movement needs, general training needs and to fit her current playing schedule.

We captured much of the day on video for a cool video blog look inside all the different things Amy is doing to improve her functional movement and power output.

This clip is some excerpts from me taking her through a functional speed interval workout specifically desgined for her movement patterns needs.

LPGA Corning Classic

This week is the LPGA Corning Classic. Due to economic reasons and dwindling sponsors, etc. this will be the last year for the long standing LPGA event.

We are testing and training a number of LPGA golfers in conjunction with Adam Schriber including Candie Kung, Morgan Pressel, Amy Hung and Angela Park... so I made my way over to the course yesterday to watch them practice (our office is about 45mins from Corning in Endicott, NY).

These women are amazing golfers and athletes. I have spent alot of time around the PGA and men's golf in general and not so much if any around the LPGA until recently as we started to work with many LPGA and Futures tour players. Let me tell you, they can play and it is great to watch! In addition the atmosphere is much more low key and enjoyable than the PGA.

In addition, we are a part of training a number of women tour / college golfers and I can tell you they train like serious athletes. We have them cranking out kettlebell circuits, high intensity intervals, explosive plyometrics and they can hang with anyone in the gym or on the course. They take their golf and training super serious.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend checking out the Corning Classic or any LPGA event... you won't be dissappointed!

Savannah

We have been crankin at an incredible pace since last year. But the day to day business of keeping up with data flow and analysis has kept me from special projects, relationships and new business development.

I got an opportunity to head to Savannah, GA for 4 days last week, and thought it would be a great opportunity to re-charge the batteries while at the same time re-connecting on projects and with business development opportunities that I have not had time to give my attention. Boy was I wrong!! The pace of new clients, data flow, analysis and the issues that go with it, just keeps increasing and followed me to GA :( ... you know they say, the best laid plans!

oh well, I am not complaining, because that just means that our business continues its growth cycle and thats an amazing thing, especially in this economy! We have worked hard for 14 years to be in this position so it's not a surprise, but can be a bit overwhelming at times...

One of our big initiatives right now is adding staff... but it takes time to get the right people and the right fit... basic digitizing/data processing staff is one thing but more advanced biomechanics staff is a totally different ball game.

It's crazy here at welch-e, but its all GOOD !

GO FAST, GET DIRTY !

The warm weather is here, so that means, it is mountian bike season ! Of all the sports I participate in personally and professionally, mountain biking may be my absolute favorite... cross country, back country, downhill, freeride, I love it all...

The warmer weather means I can finally start to get out on my bike, get away from it all - the stress and work - and clear my mind, push my body, get dirty and GO FAST !

My 5 year old daughter Gillian definitely has her father's GO FAST genes - she loves to go fast on her scooter, on skiis, sleds, running, but mostly her BIKE ! She is already asking when she can go out in the woods and go FAST ! LOL

Cycling Research

Video: Cycling Research

welch-e technologies collected data on participants of the
2005 Chris Thater Memorial Bike Race for research on cycling biomechanics with focus on performance and injury avoidance.

Before providing zenoLINK 3-D motion analysis as a consumer product, welch-e technologies conducts extensive research on performance and injury biomechanics and performance enhancement training. The 2005 Chris Thater was just one of many cycling research efforts.

Took the time to re-edit some of the lecture footage from the Michigan Junior Golf Day. The footage is of myself and Adam Schriber giving some lecture prior to break out sessions. Adam is a long time client of
welch-e technologies. Our history goes back all the way to the mid 90's when we worked with the David Leadbetter Golf Academies and Adam was a key part of their organization. Adam works with a number of LPGA and PGA golfers including Candie Kung, Anthony Kim and Morgan Pressel.

zenoLINK T-Shirts hit FOOSPORT store!

We are really excited about our new zenoLINK apparel. welch-e technologies teamed up with artist and graphic designer John Pidcoe of Anything Artistic to create a line of casual and athletic apparel. The designs blend the welch-e hardcore blue collar work ethic and the cutting edge scientific approach of zenoLINK. John has done art work and design for us in the past, including the artwork on our office windows and inside our office.

Our plan is to release one new graphic every couple months... starting with casual wear, including t-shirts, hoodies, hats and then moving into athletic wear.

We are only doing small runs of each design - get one at while they are still in stock at: FOOSPORT.com

Michigan Junior Golf Day

Michigan Junior Golf Day video blog

It was a real privilege to participate in the Michigan Junior Golf Day. Over 100 kids attended the program. Brad Dean and Adam Schriber focused on full swing fundamentals, we focused on Biomechanics. A number of the Crystal Mountain golf academy staff helped with short game and learning how to practice break out sessions. The kids were fantastic: very focused and very behaved. All put 100% effort into the drills and exercises. I don't think it could have gone any better. I think the Michigan Junior Golf Day is a great template for others considering introducing elite youth golfers to elite level training and the Crystal Mountain Elite Junior golf camps are probably the best approach to training young aspiring golfers I have seen.

What's on your MP3 player?

When not on the road training and teaching, I am back at home and the office, processing data and creating training programs. Up at the crack of dawn, staying up through the wee hours of the morning... even my 5 year old daughter, Gillian, says dad you need to get some sleep !

"time enough for rest in the grave" -conan the barbarian ... is my moto these days! things are just blowing up big time !!

anyway... many times what keeps me going besides the red bull, is my mp3 player. Tonight is no exception, cranking out data and programs all night and have a long way to go... thought it would be fun to list a sampling of what's on my mp3 player tonight:

rage against the machine - sleep now in the fire
missy elliot - ching a ling
smiths - please please please let me get what I want
john mayer - say
iron & wine - naked as we came
piebald - american hearts
incubus - echo
ben harper - welcome to the cruel world
ben harper - faded
nike drake - pink moon
nikka cost - like a feather
death cab for cutie - a lack of color

Elite Golf Performance

Elite Golf Performance has been a client of ours for several years now. Matt Christian, the driving force behind Elite Golf Performance, started out on the journey of finding a better way to train golfers, by coming to a zenoLINK workshop in April 2007. He came with an open mind, but I believe the zenoLINK approach was still "shock to the system". The idea of using 3-D motion analysis as a diagnostic and looking at the golfer through the eyes of the medical model - diagnosis and prescription based on deficit in functional patterns - was a big step. Matt took that step and has never looked back. Matt and Elite Golf Perfomance are a perfect example of the impact of zenoLINK and Progressive Skills TrainingTM (PST) on the advancement of sport. Elite Golf Performance is growing and we are really excited about their most recent advancement. We are proud to have a contribution to the success and look forward to the future!

Training with Candie Kung

VIDEO BLOG OF CANDIE

We landed in Detroit on Thursday evening and our first stop in Michigan was Lansing and Michigan State University. Friday we were scheduled to work with LPGA golfer Candie Kung. We first did some testing and basic work with Candie and her coach Adam Schriber in October of 2008. Candie followed up by participating in a zenoLINK "bootcamp" (a three day intensive training) in December 2008 and took a 8 week program home from the bootcamp to Texas to train during the off season. With three tournaments under her belt, she had a break so we were able to follow up with her, zenoLINK test her and work out before she heads out on a three week run of tournaments in Mexico, Phoenix and then the first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship in Palm Springs.

Candie is not only a great golfer but a genuinely nice person with intesity and drive. She works on her game and works out in the gym hard. She has all the tools to put together an amazing 2009... we know she will succeed!

Another successful trip in the books!

WOW... finally back in the office after a 9 day training - education trip that started with Duke University and ended with Michigan, training Candie Kung, participating the Michigan Junior Golf Day at MSU and then training staff at Crystal Mountain Resort up near Traverse City. It was an incredibly intensive 9 days with a ton of travel, both plane and car, but it really paid off. I updated some about Duke, but didn't have the time during the Michigan segment. I will update including some video over the next few days with details about Michigan!

Detroit Rock City

Landed in Detroit this afternoon... only had a 30 min delay on my flight out of Philly. On the other hand George Bock, welch-e technologies Dir. Operations and Business Development, was not so lucky. George had a 2hr delay in Chicago. None the less we both arrived in Detroit got our car and drove to Lansing where we will be spending the next two days. Tomorrow training golfers including LPGA's Candie Kung, and Saturday participating in the Michigan Junior Golf Day at MSU... I guess I better get some sleep.

Off to Michigan

Arrived home last night after the Duke trip. Slept in my own bed!!! Packaging for my trip to Michigan... flight out at 12:30pm. Let's see, I whopping 15hrs at home, LOL.

I am super pumped about the Michigan trip. A mini camp with Candie Kung on Friday, youth camp on Saturday and golf workshop/training at Crystal Mountain on Sunday and Monday. Will be jam packed but highly productive. Duke through Michigan is an awesome way to kick off a major month, close out an incredible 1st Quarter 2009 and launch full force into Spring, 2nd Quarter 2009.

Duke is a SUCCESS!

My time at Duke was raging success! The main force behind our work with Duke is Eric Hegedus, PT, DPT, MHSc, OCS. He is the Interim Vice Chief and Associate Professor, Division of Doctor of Physical Therapy. Eric is also the driving force behind Integrated Golf at Duke and the Peak Performance Golf Program... although after this zenoLINK workshop our relationship should go well beyond golf to include lacrosse and basketball performance evaluation and training. As well as research in golf, lacrosse and basketball. It is a real honor and incredibly exciting to be working with the caliber of professional of Eric and his staff and Duke University.

This trip totally took me back to my research days at ASMI and BioMotion Foundation.

Starting with golf and covering technical stuff today, then we do some testing. Tomorrow will be all about figuring out what is going on and doing something about it ! Then on to lacrosse to finish out. I am excited, should be good!

Internet Issues

On my way to Duke University to do a 2 day workshop on golf and lacrosse. Stuck in Philadelphia on a 3 hour layover and I can NOT get my Verizon broadband to connect for more than a few minutes at time without getting kicked off ! Major frustration as I have a ton of work to do... called Verizon about it, and it seems the wireless broadband just doesn't work very well in airports. NOT GOOD. Hope I get better connection at the hotel in Raleigh-Durham or the hotel has decent broadband. In this day and age you really don't expect to be unable to connect to a reasonable network. Crazy how dependent we are on technology!

Finalized Graphic

Finally tweaked the graphic design for the first t-shirt in the apparel line we working on with John Pidcoe,Anything Artist, and it is ready to go to print ! Pretty exciting. We asked John to apply his artistic and graphic design expertise to a series of graphics for apparel starting with t-shirts (dress and workout) that would combine his artistic vision with our business and technological vision. Something that would be "hip" and current but also embody the welch-e "old skool" work ethic and no frills approach. I think he hit it right on the button... can't wait to get them printed, on foosport.com and on the backs of hardcore athletes.
